Beautiful pics brother.
'Ghulails' or slingshots depend on strong elastic materials, typically vulcanized natural rubber or the equivalent, and thus date back no further than the invention of vulcanized rubber by Charles Goodyear in 1839.
They have been used as a military weapon, but primarily by guerrilla forces due to the primitive resources and technology required to construct one. Such guerrilla groups included the Irish Republican Army; prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Saddam Hussein released a propaganda video demonstrating slingshots as a possible insurgency weapon for use against invading forces.
Its a common 'weapon' of kids in our villages to hunt down small birds and fruits. In my early youth i used to make many kinds of them.
Now adays you can find the advanced one in Sitara market with steel frame.

Thanks brothers and especially ka-khan for shring nice info. I bought some from sitara market, problem is that tube rubber is not well connected to metal and sometimes detaches and smashes in face while shooting.

This reminds of my old days of hunting sparrows with Ghulail, the hit probability was low. But then with experience, I always used to sneak under the tree shadows to get the closest contact range for a better hit. Another thing which actually worked was the acquisition of rounded pebbles rather than irregular one. One of our servants at that time used to make round clay balls for better hit %.

In short it was total fun.

Dear TYR, same slingshot available from Sitara Market for Rs. 50 to 250. Ammo can be bought separately, not seen in Sitara Market.

Ameer, true, we use to make clay balls in childhood for same purpose, both ammo was calle "Ghun-dara".

I don't know about your style survivalist brother, but i always kept the V-FRAME sideways rather aiming through the V. It gave me good space to stretch the rubbers past my left eye and then bang (lolz). You really reminded me of those sweet moments.

Dear Brothers,

Making ghulails and hunting with them has been one of my favourite hobbies in child hood and beyond, right through to college days.Even now I have a black widow sling shot. The power bands are worn out and I have ordered new ones from UK.I use marbles for ammo and they are fast, accurate and carry a lethal punch.Soft drink cans, fired cartridge shells and and an occasional tilliar are my usual targets.Plus wing shooting practice on flying crows is very challenging.

In olden times the inner tube of the bicycle the servants used was in great demand ,I always tried to get the tube changed so that I could make my ghulail rubbers from them. :)

Superb share. Thanks a lot for the revival of memories.

Mehdi

we used to make them by cutting V shape branch of tree. this V shape branch in our local language is called "Sangee). Shots were usually round stones. and in some special moments we made them with clay by putting cotton in it for toughness.
what a sweet memories you remind all of us.
Bundle of Thanks
