Much has been said about this handgun. First things first, itís a CZ, a CZ that the CZ team itself (among many others) for limited IPSC and variants. The rest can be read up on the internet and a certain T shirt owned and proudly worn by our Chief.

Itís a recent purchase and I have shot around 350 rounds (and counting) through this handgun and I must say, "The more, the merrier" :)

Before Purchase:
The internets been full of Shadow this and Shadow that. Some pro's, some cons, and of-course, some bias. Cutting it short, this handgun's been on my wish list since last year. Finally I heard the CZs are in town. Better grab one I thought. When I asked about it, the dealer said he didnít have any Shadow but a CZ 75 phantom. Finally, when I inquired about the "steel" frame phantom, I was shown the Shadow :) The first thing that you notice holding it is the balance. The gun is slightly muzzle heavy. The second thing you notice is the weight (1.2 kg Approx.)

In the Box:

The plastic box had a the usual paper work,
A bore brush
A flimsy plastic pull through lever
Two 18 round mags
The pistol itself
A spare main spring
A target print out marked with the serial number of the gun.[/*]

After Purchase ( In chronological order):
Scrubbing. Happiness. Dry firing. More happiness.

Off to the Range:

Disclaimer II: Please note that I am not very experienced at pistol shooting and a novice at best. Got my range membership recently as well. In fact, it was my third time at the range when I shot the shadow for the first time. So, I do believe the pistol can do much better in the hands of a good shooter.

Day 1 with the shadow:
The pistol shot beautifully. The impatient man pulling the trigger, not very much. The results were good none the less. Specially the pseudo rapid (one shot / second. ) target results shown below. This was shot with Chinese Polytech Ammo (White Box). Targets are 25m Precision Pistol targets.

Things that stood out on day 1: The trigger creep. Pre travel had creep. The break had creep. Fortunately there wasnít any post travel and the trigger reset was very good.

http://s3.postimage.org/eSHTA.jpg (http://postimage.org/image/u6uo8apw/)

Day 2 with the shadow:
Day two was better. I had more patience and shot much better groups. Targets follow. All shots were taken at 15 meters. Targets are standard NRA 25 m Precision Pistol targets. The First target is wrongly marked as a previous day target. Kindly excuse the error.

Total Stats:
Number of rounds: 350
Types of Ammunition fired: Armscor FMJ, Chinese Polytech FMJ, Wolf FMJ, FNH FMJ (Belgium) , POF FMJ, Tula FMJ.
Stoppages: None what so ever.

Looking Back / After thoughts.
Value for Money: Unbeatable.
You pay almost equivalent to the US price (880 USD after discount) unlike other 500 ~ 600 USD pistols which are retailing here for 300 K onwards.
Overall a wonderful purchase. I would love t get my hands on another one and just put it in my closet. Its just that comforting to own one.

Trigger: A love hate relation.
The trigger is much better now than what came out of the box. Pre travel has no creep now and the break is crispier. I m counting on the trigger to really shine once I cross the 1000 round mark.
The shadow will take you for a ride if you want to do IPSC style shooting (speed) but it is a difficult pistol to shoot for precision shooting. Not very forgiving when it comes to trigger errors. You do something slightly wrong, and rest assured, it will be reflected on your score. Its just that way with precision machines I guess :) The CZ TS on the other hand, is very forgiving. But lets save the TS for later.

Recoil: This gun handles very nice in my hands. I can assure you of the fact that you will not wait to pull that trigger again, and again. Very little muzzle climb. The sights just hug the target as if tied down by an invisible bungee cord. Itís a pleasure to shoot.

Someday / Maybe Projects:
I m thinking Mamba!

@Starfish very good review indeed! This is the gun and review I was waiting for! Thank you very much bro!

You wrote: "The shadow will take you for a ride if you want to do IPSC style shooting (speed) but it is a difficult pistol to shoot for precision shooting"

I am sorry but could not get the meanings of the above line. If it is what I think it is! then maybe its my luck that the guns I like have some trigger problems

I mean that other than this one I like P99 very much and people have reservations about its trigger as well, while I think its trigger is simply marvelous!

Starfish
27-10-2010, 11:37 AM
Not at all Hammad. The trigger on the shadow is marvelous. The above line is a comparison with the CZ TS trigger. You will come to realize problems with even the premium triggers out there once you shoot the TS.
And you re welcome. :)

CZ 75 SP 01
What a great gun it is , it has three variants, the Shadow, The Tactical and the Custom Target and one in a Polymer Frame as well.
All variants are extremely accurate and reliable. At the price these are available, one should not miss these at all. These guns cost as much or slightly more abroad than a Glock or Sig but are available at almost a third the price.
CZ has bought up Dan Wesson and now exporting Dan Wesson revolvers as well as 1911 type pistol models in 45 and 9mm.

mhrehman sahib, I would personally prefer a Shadow due to its all steel construction. I feel CZ75's slide in frame mechanism goes best with all steel construction. If you prefer a polymer frame, Glock 17 may be a better option though in this particular case, a man like me would suffer from a strange feeling of paying far more for a handgun which actually costs less :)

Although heavier, the Shadow was much better to hold than Phantom.
Didn't like the Phantom at all... if polymer is a preference, I would
suggest the SP-07 Duty.

Aquarius Sir, yes there is an extra main spring.I initially thought that its a lighter main spring but later research revealed that its a stronger main spring than the one already installed. It is just a replacement part for ppl who fancy a stronger main spring for harder hammer and consequently harder primer strikes.

And Thank you SonnenKind! glad you enjoyed it :)

MhRehman Sir,
I m not sure if the traditional (pre B) hammer will fit or not. I would probably say it wouldnt. You can significantly lighter the trigger pull by the following steps:
1. Get a custom job done on the trigger. The Sear and some parts of the extractor will also be polished.
2. Get it converted to SA only.
3. Put a light main spring in it. Available springs are 15, 13, 11 and even 10 pounds.

You can get all the stuff from czcustom.com they have some really good parts for the shadow and the TS.

@Denovo Sb, This really is confusing. I measured the barrel and it is 114 mm but if you include the little protrusion in the chamber, it comes out to be 4.72 inches.
I guess the Europeans and the Americans have different ways of measuring the length of the barrel.

@Steve: Give in to the temptation Sir! its the best feeling in the world :p

@SpayPanther: I cant say I have documented proof of the frame being made out of steel but the weight of the frame is much much more than an alloy frame. So I assume it is made out of steel.

Actually, the barrel length of SP-01 is 114mm however if we include the feed ramp (measuring exactly 6mm in SP-01's case) the total barrel length stands at 120mm. its just a way some manufacturers measure barrel length. some do it by adding the length the rifled tube and length of the chamber whereas some also include any protruding parts as well. however for all practical purposes (such as accuracy and speed) length of the rifled cylinder/tube should only be considered IMHO.

@SpayPanther: I cant say I have documented proof of the frame being made out of steel but the weight of the frame is much much more than an alloy frame. So I assume it is made out of steel.

first of all, you do not need documented proof ;) . SP-01 is a pretty universal product and quiet well known around the world. the weight alone should be enough to conclude that its made out of steel. anyways, with a product of such international fame, you can easily find qualified sources/statement/facts from the INTERNET. :)

by the way, the frame is made out of steel through a process called investment casting and if you are into marketing and know how to make an effective sales pitch then you'll know why its called precision investment casting. this process is used instead of CNC machining to save manufacturing costs and time. downside is that this process produces casts which can potentially degrade quality and strength as many flaws are introduced when molten metal is poured into casting then subsequently cooled back into solid state. flaws such as porosity, shrinkage, Stressed Induced Cracks and Cavity, to name a few can cause catastrophic failures where high stress and precision mechanics are involved.

Regards.

@Spaypanther,
The SP-01 family of CZ-75 pistols are all steel framed, except the Phantom, which is polymer frame. This information is available on CZ website. Physical observation further verifies this fact. And as Starfish has pointed out, it is a heavy pistol, around 300gm heavier than alloy framed pistols and almost 400gm heavier than polymer framed pistols of same size.

sorry for asking this question. In Intl forums I see Phantom instead of shadow. Is there a
difference.
Sir, Shadow is everywhere on the international forums as well. There are two Base models in the SP01 line. the SP01 and the SP01 Tactical. The rest are variations, tweaked versions of the base models. The SP01 has the standard safety and the Sp01 Tactical has a decocker. thats all. the rest is the same. Similarly, the phantom is the SP01 with a polymer frame. the Shadow is the SP01 without a firing pin block, with different sights, and certain improvements in the slide, extractor and slide stop for better ejection and feeding. Then there are the custom models like shadow target, shadow custom, tactical combat etc etc.

As this beautiful weapon has already been reviewed by Starfish brother, I find this thread appropriate to post some pictures of my new Girl friend..
hope Starfish brother won't mind it.
The 16 rounds magazine of CZ 75B in picture #5 & 6 fits and works very well in Shadow.. infact it looks more beautiful with this 16 rounder than its original 18 rounds magazine.
CZ 75 SP01 Shadow is a great weapon and specially I liked its sights which very quickly points the target because of the fibre-optic front sight with Novaks rear sights.

Shadow has 1911 type external safety and 1911 is considered quite safe to carry locked & loaded.
Lowering the hammer on hot gun is safe for some and dangerous for others, so it depends how expert one is but normally its not recommended to amateurs.

De-cocker lowers & stops hammer to half way in CZ's unlike Beretta that drops hammer fully on the frame when de-cocked.

Can somebody explain this half cock feature to me? any benefits associated with stopping the hammer half way through?

I agree on the 1911 feature, yet the grip safety on the 1911 is the major reason for this confidence.

As for 12G bro's blunt and interesting question, lols! Never thought of this before also, so my question is the same, basically, any major benefit apart from lowering DA trigger-pull by perhaps a pound or two?? Regards.

just purchased a sp01 shadow from national traders last week, unfortunately the price has gone up to 100k even though i mentioned that i was a member of pakguns and others had paid 90k, the owner said his shop was fixed price and that is the price he sold them for in the past. I still think that it is worth every rupee that i paid and has beautifull trigger and amazing accuracy straight out the box.fired 300 round of barnaul ammo without any fte/ftf ,will post a pic of 40 yard target results
trigger creep was noticeable at first but dissapeared after a 100 rounds and a good strip and lube and is now very light and smooth.

latest news is the price is now 120k http://www.pakguns.com/showthread.php?3553-Dealers-to-Avoid-!/page5

i bought a cz shadow from fakhre alam 2 weeks ago when he had only 4 pieces left and when i was first shown the box with the shadow in by his assistant it contained 3 magazines one in the gun and 2 by the side upon seeing this fakhre alam said something angrily in pushto to his assistant and his assistant moved the box under the counter and removed one magazine and then placed the box on the counter. I said the box had 3 magazines in it and now it has only 2 to which fakhre alam replied rudely that all shadows come with only 2 magazines. i made the purchase for 100k and if you check online all shadows come in the box with 3 magazines. when i asked fakhre alam if there are any spare magazines for sale he said no not until new delivery in january.

so this guy is removing one magazine from each shadow box and will charge whatever he likes for the shadow and spare magazines. he can easily do this because he has a monopoly and i expect prices to hit 2 lakh very soon

extremely good shooting bro. keep it up. to be honest, the groups are simply amazing for 100 , 200 yard groups. keep up the good work.

Regards.

p.s. Kindly do explain "standing both hands". cause if i'm right then making such a group while standing on both of your hands would be "out of this world" type of thing. by the way, where and how did you held on to that gun? ;)

Thats great shooting from a distance at which even the target paper will hardly be visible (200 M).. keep it up Coolbox brother.

BTW is this fixed iron sights you mentioned, better than the usual Shadow sights with fibreoptic front sight.. please shed some light on it & if possible please post some pictures of your customized Shadow.. from where did you get these sights ?? will really appreciate your response.

Dear all I have been visiting this site since long and have now deciced to venture in this field. First all my felicitations to all senior members for guiding the new entrants about what to buy and from where to buy. I also want to buy a 9mm and as I have read the posts I have shortlisted my list to Stoeger Cougar, CZ SP01 Tactical and Taurus PT 917C( As per my reckoning they are all under 100k). Though I have not found any review of Taurus PT 917C here but seeing the pics at Taurus website I have decided to go for it instead of PT92 or 24/7. So can anyone please tell me which pistol will be good for me out of those listed above or shall I revisit my choices. The main purpose for buying the pistol (obviously other than SD) is to enjoy shooting at ranges.

Then simply go for the CZ SP01 Tactical but that will be a little more than 100K.

Thank you brothers. No doubt Shadow is an amazing weapon (picture courtesy of a very dear buddy). Ammo used was Barnaul 9mm, elevation adjustment was done by firing 3 shots at another target (a 500ml juice bottle, placed adjacent to target :D visible vaguely in pic below)

@12 Gauge bro & aquarius bro, below pic elaborates how I was shooting that day..nothing out of this world..fixed iron sight means no scope/magnification etc, just standard factory 'iron' sights

Just to ad a little, this Sunday on the range a much respected senior at our forum tried out multiple handguns doing timed double taps at three IPSC targets. The guns included CZ Raami, CZ TS, CZ 85 Combat and the CZ 75 Shadow. He shot from the draw and his best time was 2.8 seconds including the draw, and six bullets on 3 targets 3 feet apart. According to him, he liked the shadow the best. The gun is very comfortable to shoot while taking quick multiple shots.

More on this later and some pictures with the upgrades. And a teaser for the final planned upgrade.

Shadows are not available in Karachi at the moment and for some time. SOME Phantoms are available and asking price by dealers is Rs. 110k. Since Shadow's do not have a firing pin block does this mean that the gun might go off if dropped on its head w/ a round in the chamber? overall consensus is that Shadow has been developed w/out firing pin block for a crisper trigger and is better for range shooting. However, i personally like the Phantom for daily carry and occasional range shooting
