View Full Version : Different versions of Taurus PT99 AFS

13-09-2009, 03:07 PM
Hi Guyz,

Few months back I had bought Taurus PT99 AFS. I am satisfied with its performance, its just one thing bugging me since few days! if anyone can help me out to answer this would be great:

I was going through http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjkemcnLgTQ and noticed that mine PT99 does not have the "Laser glider" under the barrel as shown in this Video. Attached are two pictures (With and without glider) of PT99 which I got from internet.

Why there is a difference? [/*]
Why its under the same brand name?[/*]
How can I fit laster as mine Taurus does not have glider?[/*]

PT99 with glider

PT99 without glider

I searched internetl like hell but found no pointers!

Thanks in advance :)

no worries bro, usually manufacturers add accessories (and other bling bling stuff) to their products (such as under barrel accessory rails) in the later years to boost sales. its not really an upgrage, its more like a marketing gimmick.

Welcome to the Forum, sir.

The "laser glider you mention" is actually called a rail, upon which a light or a laser may be mounted.

There can be two plausible explanations for the difference between the two aforementioned models. One, that Taurus makes the 92/99 in both rail- and rail-less configurations. Two, the rail-less version was the older version and the one with the rail is now the one being manufactured. From pictures in older gun magazines from the 1990s, I am certain that the older model 92/99s did not have a rail. In either case, it seems pretty clear that you have the rail-less version.

About fitting a laser without a rail: I'm not sure if that's feasible or even possible. Mountable laser modules are out of the question, due to absence of the rails. There might be one other way, a couple of times, I've seen a laser module mounted onto the front part of the trigger-guard, however I feel that that particular option is not very stable.

Hope that satisfies your query.

Yoosha.. a little Post purchase dissonance is expected .. But not where rail equipped 92s are concerned!!

all the gushing here on PG would drive it away completely!

@all...........Plz I need a bit of info regarding the grip size of these two models above, mainly the 92fs series and the 917C/909 series, is the size of grips on these two series the same? Are the plastic grips interchangeable between these two series?

Plz let me know, I need it for some query. Thanks.

@Mods........As soon as I'v received my info, I'll ask for closure here.

As per my info AK, the grip size on all these three is the same. Regarding grips interchangability, I know that these are interchangable between 917 and 92/99, but not sure about 909. Also the mags are the same for all these three and is says so on the company original magazines too (engraved).

Not sure about interchangability among Taurus's own range but its sure beretta 92fs grips are not interchangable with any of the Taurus equalants.

I would however appreciate a lot if any member with BOTH models at home could come forth with some info.

@Den.........Thanks bro. Let's see, what any member with BOTH has to say, if any!

Thanks SA, very useful and timely link above. I feel it's all the same.

@Yoosha...You got nice piece in fair price.
I had bought the new one, no compalins from this arm since the day i bought...

One suggestion: Internet is not safe place, take special measures whenever you share information about your arm's identity...One can easily read out the serial number of ur firearm.

I think the PT99 with rails is a newer model than the one without rails... the following site provides details for the PT92, but could be applied to the PT99 as well... http://www.imfdb.org/index.php/Taurus_PT92
