When hunting or photographing wild animals camouflage is of the utmost importance.

This set of videos provide step by step instructions on how to construct a camouflaged suit known as a ghillie suit.

I use a ghillie a lot in calling predators. I have had coyotes to within one metre while I was in a ghillie.
The ghillies in the video are very effective, but not user friendly. They are heavy and hot.and prone to snag on underbrush.

They are designed for maximum concealment required for the military in a conflict environment.

The ghillie I use is not intended to make me invisible. It is simply intended to change my profile so I lose my "human" form.

My suit is a commercially produced ghillie. It is a mash undergarment with camo strips sewn to it. With the mesh it is lightweight and it breathes so it is not uncomfortable in the heat of early season.

During season we call our first stand at dawn and our last at sunset. In between we may do 12 stands some a few miles apart. We drive from one to the next. I put my ghillie on at dawn, hunt and drive with it on and take it off after our last stand. It is that comfortable to use. As a result it does get used instead of left behind.

Here are some pics.

Redfrog,

Can you give us some links to websites that make and sell these suits?

Thanks.

You can improvise, if the materials are not available take the ideas and use them in what is available to you. You wouldn't have to make them exactly the way shown.

In one of the videos the guy shows how to construct a "yeti" and all you need for that is some foliage a knife and something to tie it onto your back after you've made it.

many sites mention BDUs instead of a flight suit. BDUs(Battle Dress Uniforms) have the advantage of being already printed with a camouflage pattern. you can get BDUs at any army store selling ready-made ones or get the cloth and get it made to your own pecs.

Unwaxed floss could possibly be replaced by the commonly known DMC thread(used extensively in making desi quilts). you can get it in any color you like.

you can use things like Samad Bond instead of shoe goo which is just a very strong glue.

haven't seen the vids so i can't say what's the fishing rod for or what's LOO LAJE...

There are certain products on he market that can help to minimise scents.
Also when hunting you have to make sure the wind is blowing towards you rather than towards the game as smells are carried down wind.

Some info and tips on avoiding being smelled when hunting.

Please note this is just what Ive found whilst searching the net as I'm not a hunter myself (not yet anyway) and I'm sure Redfrog will be able to elaborate.

When calling predators, you will not beat the canine nose. That is why they use dogs for sniffing drugs or explosives.

Any time I set up to call coyotes, I pay close attention to the wind. I set up so I am calling into the wind. But the coyote can come from any direction, so it is important to watch my "back door" for something approaching down wind. If the coyote hits the area of my scent he will be gone as fast as he can move, and it is unlikely he will stop for a shot.

My world is not perfect and neither is the coyotes, so he makes errors. Wearing a ghillie can confuse his eyesight so even though he can get your scent, he may decide to come in for a closer look. I have no way to know how many times he has smelled a human, but I have seen them beg for food at the side of a highway rest area.

While hunting in my ghillie, I have had coyotes come to within a meter of me from the downwind side. It can get very busy , very quickly when that happens :D

Coyotes like us do not always make the correct choices in life. I have had a group of 7 coyotes come to the call. I killed one, the rest ran off. I immediately went back to my call and had the remaining six return and I killed another. I repeated this until I had 4 dead on the ground. This scene has been played for me on four different occasions.

I have had bears within 3 meters and they seemed oblivious to me being there.

I also use the ghillie instead of a blind while hunting ducks and geese.

Thanks for the inf Redfox

What do you think of the "scent minimising products"? Do you use them at all?

What about other products such s certain types of attractants designed to attract animals? Are they effective?

Thanks for feedback

I don't use scent blockers. I think they wouldn't do much in my hunting situation. I hope to kill before the animal enters my scent cone.

Some callers use a mixture of coyote urine and rabbit urine. It is sprayed downwind in an effort to confuse the coyote and make him linger long enough to get the shot. I would rather just shoot the coyote than risk a playful breeze blowing the urine spray back on me.:D
